Over the past few years I have fallen head over heels in love with Pilates. Don’t get me wrong, I tried to play coy in the beginning. I would look for reasons why I should save my precious $65.00 instead of taking a weekly private session (after all I was a public school teacher getting paid pennies to teach 43 five-year-olds every day). But, nevertheless, Pilates always won.
If I played hard-to-get and managed to avoid Pilates for a week or two, I would just find myself only yearning for it more. However, the more I let my guard down and just accepted the fact that I needed and WANTED Pilates in my life the more joy and fulfillment I felt.
Sounds like the beginning of a cheesy Nicholas Sparks novel or something that you would see as a success story for an acclaimed dating site, huh? Interestingly enough, the more I delve into the world of Pilates the more I discover that there are SO many people out there who have a story similar to mine–A deep and passionate love affair with Pilates.
Classic story of girl meets reformer, girl falls in love??
This past April, I spent my spring break in New York City. While I was there, I did not spend my day sight seeing, shopping or visiting local coffee shops. Instead, I was in the True Pilates Studio watching, practicing and hoping that I would be able to absorb the knowledge of Joseph Pilates simply by using the historic equipment that he built with his own two hands. I found my way to the Upper West Side True Pilates Studio because I had officially begun my journey as an apprentice.
I was at a cross-roads in my career as a public school teacher because my zest and joy for teaching was fading. I was considering the unthinkable…giving up a “safe” career in this economy to pursue Pilates.–If you know me, you also know that I have ALWAYS had a five-year plan. ALWAYS. I was the Kindergartener who came to school with a list of expectations and goals for herself.–The consideration of even entertaining this risky choice was big HUGE for me!
While in New York I met others who had been bitten by the same love bug–resulting in discomfort and colossal life changes. These BRIGHT, vibrant and EDUCATED women all were doing the same thing. Giving up a career that deemed them “successful” in our “Corporate America” culture. For example, I met one girl who, like me, was a graduate of the University of Virginia. She worked with a successful contracting company for 11 years, when she decided to forgo her comfortable pay check and esteemed title to pursue her passion for Pilates. Similarly, I met a young woman who graduated from Brown University with a degree in business. She entered into the business world upon graduation, but found it cold and heartless. But, perhaps, the MOST intriguing Pilates love affair I discovered while in NYC was from a young woman named Gabby. Gabby is a very accomplished 27-year old. In fact, she holds a law degree from a well established university and upon completion of law school was scooped up by a successful law firm in NYC. After working there for a few years, she realized that it was draining her of her light and happiness and she kept finding herself at the local Pilates studio. She battled with the decision for a few months, but ultimately she decided to take a leap of faith and pursue something that brought her joy, peace and fulfillment. Can you guess what it was?–You got it, Pilates!
The stories go on and on. It seems that EVERYONE I meet in the world of Pilates has a similar tale of falling in love with the practice of Pilates and forgoing another career (and different tax bracket) to pursue what they are passionate about.
Crazy???–Perhaps, but you only get one life.
